Saka is a large community in Nigeria’s Nasarawa State with no safe water. Women and children walk about an hour each way, barefoot or in rubber sandals, to collect water from the nearest river.

Because the river is polluted, the water collected from it must boiled before it is safe for drinking. That uses precious fuel. And on the walk to and from the river, children and adults have fallen victim to kidnappers, bandits, and rapists. There have also been accidents, injuries and deaths.

Saka has several strategically positioned water wells, but all were out-fitted with submersible pumps. When these motorized pumps failed, no one was available to repair them. The Lifewater Canada repair team consulted with community leaders and received permission to convert the motorized pumps (including this one) to hand-powered pumps that are much easier to maintain.

Today, rather than having water in abandoned wells, we praise God that the community has safe water available from those working wells. No longer does anyone need to risk their lives by walking to the distant river to gather water that is already contaminated.

Bakin Kogi Angwan Sarki, Nigeria

Bakin Kogi is a village in Nasarawa State, a few kilometres from Abuja, Nigeria’s capital city. The small community is growing quickly because many people who work in Abuja cannot afford to live there and are settling in shanty towns like Bakin Kogi.

Like many of the other shanty towns, Bakin Kogi does not have safe water. Wells that were available have broken down, so people gather their water from the Bakin Kogi River.

From contaminants that are airborne to open defecation by both humans and animals, the water from the river remains a source of concern to inhabitants. Without a choice, many depend on this water at risk of disease.

The Lifewater team arrived and replaced the hand-powered pumps on two village wells, including this one. The repairs are a great relief to mothers, children, and even the men of this community. Everyone appreciates the donors of these repairs for their kind gesture and unprecedented goodwill extended.

Pada Community, Nigeria

Dafa is in Kwali Area Council, about an hour’s drive from the city center, with a population of more 7,000 people, most of whom are subsistence farmers.

Dafa’s infrastructure has not kept up with the community’s increasing population. When Lifewater arrived, the existing hand pumps on wells were grossly inadequate and mostly broken due to over-use. Residents had to wait 2-3 hours and take turns to fetch water from the local wells.

Alternatively, they would walk about 30 minutes to the nearest river. Families, depending on their size, would make 5-10 trips daily to meet their water needs. This means families were spending 3-6 hours every day on the road to fetch water. And when the trips happened after dark, women and girls were at risk of violence, rape, or even death to meet their families’ water needs.

Also, the river water isn’t safe, said Haruna Salifu, a resident of the community, and so there have been cholera-associated deaths in the community.

Our donors enabled Lifewater to drill five new wells (including this one, to a depth of 230 feet, that is serving 470 children and adults) in Dafa. We also rehabilitated eight existing wells so safe water is flowing from them again. The community’s health has improved and people are better able to remain economically productive to care for their families.

This is a fast expanding community that depends on open water sources like rivers and streams which are often contaminated. The community also practice open defecation; so, both human and animal faeces find their way into the streams. With 4 broken wells, you will wonder why this community suffers from such water shortages. The old Mark II pumps are worn out without any form of maintenance. Thankfully, we were able to replace all 4 with AFRIDEV pumps and drilled two new wells in emerging sections of the community. This brought such great relief and the gratitude of this community knows no bound. Purchase of water from private water sellers is a luxury many people cannot afford in this rural community where subsistence agriculture in the main occupation.

Bwolo, Nigeria

The community depends on one drilled well for the entire community. The old Indian Mark II is usually under constant pressure leading to quick wear and tear. The long queue always leads to frustration among the women and children. This usually led to fight among them. With frequent breakdown of the handpump, they often resort to the open streams and rivers. Presently, Bwolo is one of the communities under threat of insecurity which constitute great risk to women as kidnappers often trail people into isolated locations.

The old pump was replaced with a new AFRIDEV pump. A new well was also drilled. This has brought so much joy to the community as they freely jubilated and expressed their joy.

The community face serious water problem with women staying up to 5-6 hours before getting water back home. On our visit to the river, the women we met lamented how they have not been able to prepare food for their family because of lack of water, as our team arrive and start to drill a well, the men, women. And children could not hide their joy, they stood outside with as all-night as the drilling was going on. When our team came back to install, it was a plenty of rejoicing for them. They immediately brought their cups and started drinking the water immediately. The joy on their faces was priceless.

Angwa Jinkai, Ijah Pada, Nigeria

This community has a population of more than 7000 people, and they depend on only one borehole with electric pump. Water from this well is available to the villagers once in three days. If you miss the chance to get water on the scheduled date, you will have to revert to the open, contaminated source. Alternatively, you can get water from the well at the primary school which is 30 minutes’ walk away. Unfortunately, you are not allowed into the school till school closes after 2:00 pm. We drilled three new wells here and rehabilitated two others. And the relief for the villagers is absolutely overwhelming. God be praised.
