2012 Progress and Plans

In 2011 we were able to help at least 6300 more people get clean water – we successfully completed 21 well projects – 5 wells in Liberia, 4 wells in Nigeria and 4 wells and 5 pump repairs in Haiti, 2 wells in Chad and 1 pump repair in Kenya.  What an awesome team we are! Together we donated $50,514.82Having added 21 wells last year, as a team, we are now helping over 30,000 people in a total 91 villages get clean water every minute of every single day!

Each village is trained to care for their water wells so all the wells are working and water is flowing – giving the gift of life, health, energy and the opportunity for a better future.

See all the wells here!

Our plans for 2012 are to continue our efforts to get clean water to the children and the men and women in Liberia, Nigeria and Haiti.  As well, Lifewater Canada is now working in East Africa where the drought conditions are the worst in 60 years, 30,000 children have died and 500,000 Africans have become refugees in search of water and food.

Water Project Counter: 92

2011-12 wells listed below, visit our ‘WELLS BUILT’ page for the full list.

This number represents over 28,300 people helped – boys, girls, women and men whose lives have been changed forever by finally having access to clean water.  They no longer have to spend their lives carting water and battling the water borne illnesses and death. New health, energy and time have allowed the children to go to school, the adults to grow their own food and to work. Their babies are not dying. Look at the list of wells and drill rigs (below) donated to communities to see how we made a difference to thousands of people.

81. & 82.  Godine Area of Balan

Both pumps sponsored by: Carson Graham Secondary School & The Water Team

Balan, Haiti
Completed: 2011

This pump repair project and new pump was appreciated. Here were comments sent to The Water Team:

“Our community in this Godine area of Balan has about 350 people. Before this new pump was installed we were forced to take water from a spring in Charles Godine some 6 miles up in the mountain. It was a long distance and caused us much sickness and weariness.

Having a new pump in our village is making a big change for us and one that we very much appreciate. It is with that in mind that we say thank you to our host for providing us this handpump.” - Jean Claudius

“We are very pleased to offer to you our gratitude for this new well. It has saved us much time and made our lives easier now that we do not have to travel to the river for our water, a distance of about 4 miles. The new pump water is so much cleaner and tastes very fine.” – Robert Joseph, Village member.

80. Eglise Saint Francoise Sales

79. Ecole Vieille Terre

Sponsored by: Blue Planet Links Foundation and The Water Team

Plain Du Nord, Haiti

Completed: 2011
“It is with great excitement that I report a combined and heartfelt thank you from our community, school and church. We are very isolated and have struggled with safe drinking water the entire history of our village. This well has had a broken pump for a long time and the rate of sickness has been increasing as we gather water from the creek at the bottom of the mountain or the swamp in the rainy season. Both sources are a long walk for all of us, approximately 5 km one way in the dry season.

Today we celebrate the efforts of your labour, a new handpump on our well in the center of our little community” – Village Representative

72. N’Djamena

Chad
Completed: 2011

When we first sponsored Gerard Koumagbigue (age in 2011: 13 years old) through World Vision in October 2009, we asked him the questions we ask all our new foster children:

  1. Do you have a water well in your village?
  2. Where do you get your water?
  3. Do you ever get sick from dirty water?

He wrote back t to us “ there is not enough clean water. I can tell you that there is no clean water at all in my community”

We wrote directly to World Vision asking them about the situation and if we could do something about it.

We have now sent a letter to Gerard to ask him to find out what are the plans for teaching hygiene and proper use of the clean water and whether there is a maintenance team in the village trained to keep the pump and well running well.

By April 2011, a bore hole had been drilled and a proper pump installed and Gerard was able to write to us that “we have a filter which allows us to make water clear”

71. N’Djamena

Chad
Completed: 2011

When we first sponsored Laide Nakaling (age in 2011: 13 years old) through World Vision in September 2009, we asked him the questions we ask all our new foster children:
1. Do you have a water well in your village?
2. 2 where do you get your water?
3. Do you ever get sick from dirty water?
He wrote back t to us “ we do no have enough clean water in our village”
We wrote directly to World Vision asking them about the situation and if we could do something about it.
By April 2011, a bore hole had been drilled and a proper pump installed and Laide was able to write to us the great news that “there is clean water in our village, near of our house. I am not sick because of dirty water” !! and World Vision sent us these photos of Laide in front of the new water well for the village.

We have now sent a letter to Laide to ask him to find out what are the plans for teaching hygiene and proper use of the clean water and whether there is a maintenance team in the village trained to keep the pump and well running well.
